International Day of Persons with Disabilities – Saturday 3 December 2011

The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

WheelchairSteve will be supporting the Main Theme:

“Together for a better world for all: Including persons with disabilities in development”

and focusing particularly on two of the suggested sub-themes:

Accessibility: removing barriers and promoting disability-inclusive development “

“Promoting data collection and statistics on disability”

We are particularly focusing on establishing a comprehensive database of manual wheelchair users, power wheelchair users and mobility scooters in addition to people who support and care for people who use wheelchairs, etc.

Please register on our mailing list to help us create this database.

Subsequently, we’ll invite people on this database to comment on accessibility, as it affects them on a daily basis, how they deal with the challenges it presents and what they’d like done to improve accessibility.

I have ideas I’d like to share, but in the first instance, I welcome your thoughts.

Thank you.
